Zooming Along Master Gardener Style

Paulette Crawford class of 2013 • Apr 16, 2020

On April 15, 2020 at 9:00 a.m. our monthly Master Gardener Association meeting took place as scheduled, if not in the way any of us would have ever imagined.

It is now the time of social distancing, a recent term we have learned and a lifestyle we have all put into practice. So, instead of our traditional gathering at the Norfolk Botanical Garden or the Zoo or any of the other public places we have enjoyed in the past, this month our meeting took place on Zoom. That’s right, Zoom, another term which may be new to many of us. Zoom has become a new way to bring people together online in a video conferencing platform.

Initially, I was actually uncertain how this would work with a large group of people. To my delight it turned out to be a very successful method of meeting. It has been hard for all of us to be isolated from our Master Gardener buddies, even though many of us talk on the phone and text regularly. We miss each other’s companionship and our project events, and we miss the opportunities to work with the community. While our own gardens undoubtedly benefit from the extra time we now have to spend pulling weeds and pruning, we still need the interaction with our fellow Master Gardeners.

Today’s Zoom meeting allowed us this opportunity. This morning fifty-nine Master Gardeners joined by Chris Epes met together in our first NMGA on-line meeting. Complete with an agenda and meeting minutes provided beforehand and financial reports displayed during the meeting, we conducted business as usual, if in a somewhat unusual environment. Change is not always easy. And certainly there will be more challenges ahead. But this new method of video conferencing allowed us to see each other’s happy faces and find out what is going on.

I am providing pictures of today’s meeting attendees, as they were displayed on my laptop screen. For those of you who were unable to join this morning’s meeting, I missed seeing you and hope you are all staying safe and doing well. And I hope it will not be very long before we are able to meet again in person. But for now I say “let’s keep Zooming!”.
