Demonstration Gardens
The Norfolk Master Gardener Demonstration Gardens showcase sustainable gardening practices in action, featuring a variety of plants suited to our local environment. These gardens serve as outdoor classrooms where visitors can learn practical techniques for creating healthy, thriving landscapes at home.
Square Foot Garden
Learn a small-space, high-yield gardening technique ideal for backyard urban vegetable and flower production. Our produce is donated to the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia. The garden is located on the grounds of the Fred Heutte Garden at 1000 Botetourt Gardens in Ghent.
Potager/Kitchen Garden
The European method of intermingling vegetables, fruits, and herbs with flowers and shrubs to product attractive and edible ornamental plantings year-round is on display here. This garden is located at Norfolk Botanical Garden, 6700 Azalea Garden Road. Find us by the Grain & Hop Garden.
African Village Garden
This organically grown garden features African-native vegetables and flowers that enhance the African Village exhibit at the Virginia Zoo. Seasonal plants are on display year-round. The Virginia Zoo is located at 3500 Granby Street.
The Native Dune Garden
Dune plantings help mitigate wind and water erosion. This garden, near the shoreline, offers beautiful examples of native plants that can grow in sand and are tolerant of salt air and salt water. The garden is located at the North end of 27th Bay Street, in East Beach.
Ernie Morgan Center Eco-Garden
This is an educational, commemorative, and aesthetic area where visitors can learn about native plants, resource conservation, and sustainable gardening practices. The garden is located just outside the Ernie Morgan Center in Lafayette Park, 3500-A Granby Street just outside the Virginia Zoo.
Native Plant and Pollinator Garden
This garden promotes understanding and appreciation of the benefits of native plants and embraces the goals of the Homegrown National Park Initiative to restore biodiversity and ecosystem function. The garden is located on the grounds of the Fred Heutte Garden at 1000 Botetourt Gardens in Ghent.
Weyanoke Bird and Wildflower Sanctuary
A dense woodland setting in the heart of Norfolk’s urban environment, this garden showcases native trees, shrubs and flowers, and the extraordinary wildlife that thrive here. Weyanoke is located at 1501 Armistead Bridge Road.
East Ocean View Children’s Garden
This year-round garden produces vegetables to share with local community members. It is a model for instruction and experience in home food production for youth and teens. The garden is located on the grounds of the East Ocean View Community Center, 9520 20th Bay Street.
