The Tasters

Those arriving early for Master Gardener College at Virginia Tech have the option of taking part in some interesting excursions to learn more about various aspects of horticulture happening around Blacksburg. Some are on campus, like tours of the labs or greenhouses, and some are farther afield. This year, eight MGs opted for a wine tour and tasting at Beliveau Farm Winery, as one of the pre-College choices. I was one of them.

Beliveau is one hundred sixty-five acres, with thirteen acres currently in vineyard cultivation. It is 12 miles outside of Blacksburg. All wines made at Beliveau are from the grapes grown on the property.

Our tasting guide, Asia, described the grapes of each of the one-ounce pours, as well as the barrels in which they were aged. Wines included Pristine, a Chardonnay/Riesling grape blend; Crazy Professor, a port-style white; Sweet Surrender, with Concord grapes; and Fireside Chat, with Cabernet franc grapes. A couple of bottles of the latter made their way back to Blacksburg to be shared in the evenings.

Our tastings included 2 types of pizza, soft pretzels with mustard and cheese, and a charcuterie board, so we could clear our palates in between the servings of eight different wine samples. This also helped Beliveau Farms Winery owners, Joyce and Yvan Beliveau, have an annual Lavender Festival that takes place this year on the weekends of June 24-25, and July 1-2. Lavender products share space in the gift shop with wines and wine memorabilia.

The winery also hosts “Friday nights at the Farm” with live music. The site also features a Bed and Breakfast, a wedding venue, as well as a gluten-free brewery.

Beliveau Farm Winery is a beautiful setting, and the hospitality was exceptional. After our tasting, guides Macie and Asia led us from the tasting room up the hill to the newest addition to the property, not yet open, so we could view the panorama of the farm, including the main vineyard. The view was a slice of heaven.

This was a most educational, enjoyable afternoon.
