When Vickie Reid attained the designation of Norfolk Master Gardener, she was able to check an item off her bucket list! Vickie has an aunt who is a Master Gardener and she enjoys discussing plants with her. It’s something she has wanted to do for a long time, but waited for retirement to do it.

Vickie is originally from Mishawaka, Indiana and attended Mishawaka High School. After high school she attended Purdue University before marrying her husband in 1985. Her husband was serving in the United States Navy and that is what brought Vickie to Norfolk.

As a member of the Class of 2022, classes started via Zoom, but Vickie was thrilled when they were able to attend classes in person and she was able to meet her classmates. Vickie describes her classmates as a diverse and knowledgeable “bunch,” and she has learned a lot from them.

Vickie volunteered for a variety of projects to attain her fifty hours and she is having a hard time deciding her favorites. She worked at the Maritime Sand Dune Forest, the Fred Heutte Square Foot Garden, the plant sale at the Hermitage, the Children’s Garden at East Ocean View, the Native Dune Demonstration Garden, the Ernie Morgan Eco Garden, the Zoo Garden, Weyanoke, Ask a Master Gardener and attended several set-up meetings for the Norfolk Botanical Garden Interpreter Program. She feels she is still learning and she volunteers for as many projects as she can fit in her schedule. Vickie is most interested in restoring our green spaces to promote a healthier planet for all living things.

Vickie lives with her husband who keeps all her tools in great repair and her Shih-tzu that likes to lay in the shade and watch her work. Her two daughters visit her garden when they get a break from their busy lives for photography and inspiration. When Vickie isn’t gardening, she likes quilting and scrapbooking.

When you see Vickie, be sure to introduce yourself and welcome her to the Norfolk Master Gardener Association.
