Meet Renee Merchant

Eileen Ballance – 2015 • November 21, 2024

Renee is originally from Franklin, Kentucky. Her family lived on a farm growing tobacco, soybeans, corn and hay.

The U.S. Navy brought Renee to Norfolk where she attended Old Dominion University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. She worked several years as a nurse. Renee attained her Master’s Degree in Exercise Science from ODU and completed classes to become a dietitian at Norfolk State University.

Renee is currently working as a dietitian in private practice. She sees patients via telehealth and works with individuals on creating healthy lifestyles.

Renee wanted to become a Master Gardener because she was interested in learning more about gardening, native plants and pollinators. She believed the Master Gardening Program was an opportunity to be surrounded by like-minded people and she had a desire to feel more connected to her community.

Renee’s favorite classes were at the Hermitage. She felt that in addition to learning, there was a hands-on component.

To attain her required fifty hours, Renee worked at the Fred Heutte Square Foot Garden and several community outreach programs.

Going forward, the square foot garden will forever be her favorite activity, but she plans to participate in community outreach programs. She is also interested and hopes to volunteer at the Weyanoke Bird and Wildflower Sanctuary.

Renee’s favorite activities when she is not gardening are running, cycling, reading, painting with watercolors, playing with her dogs, and spending time with her husband.

Renee is married and her dogs, Lucas and Tavish, make up the family unit.

When you see Renee, be sure to introduce yourself and welcome her to the Norfolk Extension Master Gardeners.
