Meet C.C. Reid – Class of 2020

Eileen Ballance Class of 2015 • Jun 04, 2022

C.C.’s family are Norfolk natives, however, she was born in Detroit and returned to Norfolk as an infant.

She attended elementary and middle school in Norfolk but attended high school in three different states.

C.C. has always enjoyed watching things grow so she tried gardening even when she lived in apartments. Many years later she became aware of the food disparity in urban neighborhoods and decided that when she retired she would try to do something about this problem.  When she heard about the Norfolk Master Gardeners she believed that being a part of that group would give her cause more validity.

C.C. had a bit of a jump start before entering the Master Gardener classes when she was a member of the six-week Home Horticulture class sponsored by the Norfolk Master Gardeners at the Eggleston Center in the autumn of 2018.

As a member of the Class of 2020, the Master Gardener classes were abruptly interrupted by the COVID-19.  C.C. didn’t care so much for the Zoom classes.  After working on a computer for years she was hoping she wouldn’t be bothered with them again.  But C.C. felt that the teaching team did a good job of “turning on a dime” in order to continue and complete the classes.  She really missed meeting with her classmates and also the meals.

C.C. participated in many projects to gain her fifty hours: Arbor Day Tree Give-Away, two Jam’n Jamz events as well as potting trees for Jam’n Jamz, two plant sales, tree planting at Chesterfield STEM Academy, two Open Norfolk Community Outreach events at 5 Points, and the Eco Garden.

C.C. is particularly interested in the community gardens which also supports her desire to help urban communities solve food problems.  When she is not working with Master Gardeners she helps with other gardens in the community.  One example is her 81-year-old neighbor who can no longer take care of her garden, so C.C. does it for her.  She also enjoys cooking, trying different restaurants and traveling.  She enjoys all kinds of crafts and is working on a sewing room.

C.C. has a daughter and two sons, all grown. She has been blessed with three granddaughters and three grandsons.

When you have a chance to meet C.C., please give her a warm welcome to Norfolk Master Gardener Association.
